Alchemies of Scent. What Experiments Can Tell Us About Ancient Perfumery and the History of Chemistry.
Over the next five years, the Alchemies of Scent team of philosophers and historians of science, Egyptologists, philologists, botanists, and organic chemists will use modern experimental techniques to replicate the recipes of five Greco-Egyptian perfumes from the time of Alexander the Great and Cleopatra VII. Using these experiments, we will explore how the quest to extract, concentrate, compound and preserve the essences of plants that influenced natural philosophy, medicine, art and culture during the fourth through first centuries BCE in Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. During our presentation, we will focus on one recipe in particular: stakte. Stakte is the ancient Greek name for an oil of myrrh mentioned in early Hebrew, Egyptian and Greek sources. Its identity, however, has remained a mystery. We will give a live demonstration of how history and experiment together can help us to uncover what stakte was and how it was made. The project is funded by the Czech Science Foundation and hosted at the Institute of Philosophy at the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, with the cooperation of the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Alchymie vůní. Co mohou experimenty prozradit o starověkém parfumářství a dějinách chemie
Tým filozofů, egyptologů, historiků vědy a organických chemiků se v příštích pěti letech pokusí za pomoci moderních experimentálních technik o replikaci receptur pěti řecko-egyptských parfémů z doby Alexandra Velikého a Kleopatry VII. Experiment má pomoci odhalit, jak snaha o získávání, přeměnu a uchovávání rostlinných esencí ovlivnila přírodní filozofii, medicínu, umění a kulturu během čtvrtého až prvního století před naším letopočtem ve starověkém Egyptě a starověkém Řecku. Ústřední výzkumné otázky pětiletého projektu s názvem Alchymie vůní společně představí Sean Coughlin a Jakub Smrček. V rámci své prezentace se zaměří na recept pro přípravu oleje se starořeckým názvem stakte, získávaného z myrhy. Přestože je olej zmiňován v raných hebrejských, egyptských a řeckých pramenech, jeho identita zůstala záhadou. Příspěvek slibuje živou ukázku toho, jak může historie v kombinaci s experimentem pomoci odhalit, co stakte bylo a jak se vyrábělo. Projekt realizovaný s podporou Grantové agentury ČR při Filosofickém ústavu AV ČR probíhá ve spolupráci s Ústavem organické chemie a biochemie.
